Ahead of the 2025/26 season, the Bundesliga’s 63rd, the Volkswagen Arena underwent extensive modernisation, nine years after the first installation of the Sporthybrid R system.

Work began with the removal of the existing pitch. heiler then renewed the drainage system and prepared the area for the new undersoil heating. By installing a modern heating system incorporating the energy-saving Sportheat Eco insulation layer, which reduces energy consumption by up to 30 per cent, the Wolves are demonstrating their commitment to greater sustainability in professional football.

A rootzone layer specifically designed for hybrid turf was then installed, followed by the insertion of the heiler Sporthybrid R system to achieve the best possible result.

This development began in 2016 with the first installation of the Sporthybrid R system in Wolfsburg. In the 2016/17 season, the Volkswagen Arena secured second place in the Pitch of the Year Award. The greenkeeping team subsequently claimed first place with the hybrid turf pitch in both the 2018/19 and 2020/21 seasons.
